Northeast third baseman Leah Mangelsen sends a throw to first during the first game of Thursday’s doubleheader with Monticello. Mangelsen hit a double and a home run in the Rebels’ 10-0 win then added three hits, four RBIs and three runs in the nightcap as Northeast made it a sweep with a 7-1 victory.

ALBURNETT — With just one scheduled River Valley Conference doubleheader, the Northeast softball team spent the bulk of its week battling a series of larger squads, both in a non-conference twinbill with Davenport North on Tuesday and as part of the two-day, 16-team Linn-Mar/Alburnett Invitational.
The result was three different splits: the Rebels dropped their doubleheader opener with the Wildcats, 10-7, but rolled in the nightcap, 9-1; fell in Friday’s tournament opener with fellow ranked squad Dallas Center-Grimes, 2-1, but followed that up with a 13-3 win over West Delaware; Northeast then opened Saturday at the tourney with a 10-2 win over Durant before falling to Iowa City High, 8-3.
