I want organizations to truly address the systemic and structural systems, behaviors, and people that are in plainsight = in a place easily seen, that engage in behaviors that impact the team culture and well-being. Working in healthcare is a privilege and we cannot hold ourselves out as ambassadors or change agents when our colleagues are being harmed or othered on any given day. This is hard work but leaders have the ability to cause a shift. The nurses of color deserve it. Let us reimagine Excellence in all spaces. Excellence =Seeing My Humanity+ My Competence + Tangible Change In Systems and Structures.

New nurses often find themselves grappling with unforeseen challenges as they step into the dynamic realm of patient care.Recent studies during a rigorous assessment of over 10K new registered nurses reveal that only 9% can recognize patient deterioration before it’s too late. There is an increasingly widening chasm between nursing education and the requisite clinical reasoning and critical thinking essential to keep patients safe.57% of novice nurses were challenged in their ability to manage patient problems, select the proper nursing intervention, and communicate relevant data to the healthcare provider.In the nursing literature, this has been identified as the “Theory to Practice Gap” and the need to “bridge this gap.We must collaborate to create meaningful interventions to make this crucial change in healthcare.What are your thoughts and experiences?     Thank you, Usha Lee McFarling for writing this story and interviewing my friends Hershaw Davis, Jr., MSN, RN (he-him-his), Dr. Monica R. McLemore, Claire Valderama-Wallace, Rumay Alexander, Jose M Maria FNP-BC, RN, CEN, TCRN. Nurses have been discussing the need for more diversity in the profession for decades. Talking about diversity, and putting up a welcome sign without making the changes that are necessary to ensure an equitable and inclusive pathway to nursing is performative and meaningless. We must name racism and oppression as the cause of social and health inequities and take immediate action to change the culture in nursing. Racism exists because we allow it to thrive. We must hold ourselves and our profession accountable. There is a plethora of evidence demonstrating that racism is a serious issue in nursing yet despite the overwhelming evidence that racism is harming nursing students, nurses, patients and communities many white and white adjacent nurses continue to deny that racism exists. I believe that denial continues because acknowledging that racism is rampant in nursing would require nurses to take immediate action to prevent harm. Yet, many nurses continue to deny racism because they are comfortable and do not want to relinquish power and privilege. Ultimately the dominant group in nursing seeks to maintain hom*ogeneity. They do not want to address racism or the work to dismantle racism would’ve started decades ago. This is why we are still discussing racism in nursing instead of taking immediate and bold action. Racism and healthcare is killing people. Full stop. People are being harmed and dying on our watch. We cannot address health equity, prevent harm, and promote health without naming racism and committing to personal, organizational and systemic work to confront and eradicate racism. We must take action to dismantle racism and hold ourselves and our profession accountable. We cannot be silent bystanders. We must hold each other and our health care professional colleagues accountable for providing safe, culturally rigorous, respectful, and quality care. We must start the culture change needed to ensure health justice NOW and we must continue this work until health inequities no longer exist.

    🌟 Throwback to an Unforgettable Experience! ✨ Exactly three months ago, I had the incredible honor of representing my school at the @NationalStudentsNursesAssociation 71st National Conference in the city of Nashville, Tennessee. Looking back, I am still filled with immense pride and gratitude for the opportunity to present a research poster that I had diligently worked on the semester before.The focus of the conference was to be a catalyst for change, and being there served as a powerful reminder that as nurses, we are advocates, change agents, and catalysts for transformation. It was an invigorating experience to be surrounded by passionate individuals who shared the same vision of making a difference in healthcare.The research topic I presented centered on maternal opioid misuse in Maryland, shedding light on the urgent need for comprehensive support systems and interventions for affected mothers and their families. The discussions and feedback I received at the conference reaffirmed the significance of our work and the potential impact we can have on improving the lives of those affected by this crisis.One of the highlights of the conference was the opportunity to connect with fellow nursing students from across the United States. The atmosphere was buzzing with energy, as we shared our journeys, exchanged ideas, and celebrated our shared commitment to the nursing profession. Each conversation left me inspired and fueled my determination to drive positive change in healthcare.In those few days, I witnessed the true power of collaboration and the strength that lies in our collective voice. The conference ignited a fire within me, propelling me forward with renewed passion and purpose.As I reflect on this throwback experience, I am reminded once again that we, as nurses, have the privilege and responsibility to advocate for our patients, to be change agents in our communities, and to serve as catalysts for transformation. Let us continue to embrace our roles with unwavering dedication, and may we always strive to make a meaningful impact in the lives we touch.I am grateful for the memories made, the knowledge gained, and the friendships formed at that remarkable conference.
